Issues of representation - P5(b)

Meaning and purpose: Animated children's films have traditionally been criticised for presenting characters in an overly simplified way which is considered problematic as the films are most offen viewed by impressionable young people. For example the untrustworthy Arabian in Aladdin and the wicked witch is snow white. Academic theory has discussed these ideas see quote below.

These stereotypes show that all the characters were built on traditional heros from literature to  make the film interesting for the audience.

“Disney’s trademarked innocence operates on a systematic sanitation of violence, sexuality, and political struggle concomitant with an erasure or repression of difference”

(This quote have been taken from Racialization, and Sexuality in Four Children's Animated Films by Disney, Pixar, and DreamWorks  page 2:

Representation is the act or an instance of representing or the state of being represented. Something that represents, as:

  • An image or likeness of something.
  • An amount or statement, as of facts, allegations or arguments
  • An expostulation, a protest
  • A presentation or production, as of a play

Shrek is not very stereotypical character as the hero in every story is a pretty man, which have special skills which they are usually use and those skills make them famouse. But Shrek is a different character because he is brave and he is protecting what he likes and believes in. He isn't the character who you would want to look at, but his behaviour is a traditional hero's behaviour.

There are some stereotypes which Princess Fiona have which would describe her as a modern princess and there as there are also some more traditional aspects of Princess Fiona's character which could be  considered stereotypical such as there was a scene where Princess Fiona has a ball where she is dancing with a Prince which attempts to behave like Shrek, but in the end Shrek comes on the white horse before this Prince kisses Fiona and shouts at them. There is this scene :

In the same way, Princess Fiona sometimes doesn't behave like a traditional princess because one of the moments she fought dangerous group of people. There is this scene :

Puss in boots

Puss in boots is a really stereotypical character as well. His role is a sub hero which hava a lot of experience in fighting and love. This stereotypes is really similar to a Spanish man, which have never have been in a long relationship with a woman. Therefore, Antonio Banderas voiced over to create this amazing impact on the viewer. There are some examples:

In this video you can hear his man manners and how he is prepared to be a hero. His attitude, the way he talks represent a traditional Spanish hero, which would come at night and save the world but no one will know his name.
